Custom Tiles

When I was approached by Verve Gallery owner, Emily Blair Wareham with “I have an idea,” without hesitation, I was in. Quickly asking What do you need me to do? I have always wanted to make tiles, so I was excited  to take on this challenge. That is how I found myself making 450 tiles for the front desk of the gallery.

Using Adobe Illustration we started by designing the shape of the individual tiles. After narrowing it down to 2-3 shapes I was time to start working int clay. After carving 8-12 samples we narrowed it down to 2-3 versions, that I then hand made multiples of each and fired. It was important to see multiple tiles in formation in order to finalize the design. Once we were able to see the bigger picture we finalized the design down to one single tile. It was time to get making!

I hand-carved two original tiles and made plaster moulds from them. This allowed me to make multiples relatively quickly. Slowly, the tiles began taking shape, no longer sitting in piles, but coming to life as a flowing pattern across all of my studio surfaces.

The tiles were then sprayed and layered with three custom glazes, giving a tactile texture and depth, shifting with light and colour and transforming into something a little dreamlike. A front desk that feels less like furniture and more like a living piece of art.
